Accumulation is for Fools (Lk 12:13-21)

8th Sunday after Pentecost

As we turn the corner into August, the RCL commences selections from the Third Gospel’s “Special Section,” which contains mostly unique Lukan material, which in turn illuminate his focus on Sabbath Economics. The backbone of this third of the narrative is a series of “rich man stories” (right), beginning with our 8th Sunday’s text.

I offer here a recording of my sermon last Sunday (which “skipped ahead” a week to the story of the rich farmer) at a local church here, which was crafted for the Canadian agricultural context. You can view the 26 minute video here. Apologies in advance:

  • the resolution quality of the church’s livestream is low;
  • they kept the large image on me preaching, with the slides as a small inset at lower right rather than vice-versa (even though the latter is more important than the former!); and
  • the adorable 15-year-old changing the slides often struggled to follow my prompts.

So goes tech in small churches. If you do full screen you might be able to see the slides! Nevertheless, the congregation was warm, we had a good time, and you’ll get the gist.

Head’s up for preachers: Next week’s blog will depart from the lectionary, in order to attend to the second half of Luke’s episode: Lk 12:22-34 (which is hopped over by the RCL—for reasons which will become clear!).
