Resources for Resistance in Trying Times

PODCASTS:

Our friend Ragan Sutterfeld just released an hour-long interview he did late last year with the Ekklesia Project about the Bible, Christian Zionism and the war on Palestine. He talks with Ched and our Canadian colleague Sylvia Keesmaat (right). Check it out here.

Thanh Nguyen

We’re getting to know young Sabeel activist theologian Thanh Nguyen; Ched had a good zoom check in with her just before she departed for Vietnam to map how Christian Zionism is impacting evangelical churches there. I commend Abeer Shehadeh-Nasser’s recent interview with Thanh (left) on the Across the Divide podcast; watch it here.

Two other interviews with Ched about HARP are in the works this month. Check Fr. John Dear’s Nonviolent Jesus and Duncan Hilton’s Religious Life podcasts for their releases.

WEBINAR:

On Saturday, February 7th, 7:00 p.m. PST there will be another opportunity to hear from Chuck Collins, Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, on his new book Burned by Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power are Ruining Our Lives and Planet. The Chalice Community Forum writes: “Billionaire power touches you – where you live, what you eat, what news you consume, what you pay for housing and even pet care!  In his latest book, Burned by Billionaires,  Collins exposes the hidden impact of America’s ultra wealthy on our social, economic, political, and ecological landscape.  Hear Collins make the case—as well as share prescriptions for creating a society of universal abundance instead of abundant inequality!” Register for this Zoom program in advancehere.  For more info: forum@chaliceuu.org.

NEWS:

Willena Cannon

Veteran Civil Rights activist Willena Cannon (left) of Greensboro passed over this last weekend. She was deeply involved in Freedom Struggles dating back to the 1960 Sit Ins, including the 1979 Greensboro massacre (below, with Nelson Johnson), and was a close associate of Beloved Community Center and Faith Community Church.

See a video obituary here. We were honored to know her, and our prayers go out to the BCC circle, which has lost so many beloveds. May Willena dance with angels while all of us carry on her work. ¡Presente!

Ched & Elaine had good conversations with: Catholic Workers Tensie Hernandez, Dennis Apel and Irishman Benni McAbe over New Year’s; with longtime faith-rooted activists Joyce Hollyday & Bill Ramsey during their visit; and with L.A. Presbyterian colleagues Elizabeth & Tim Gibbs-Zehnder.  Ched flew up to Sacramento for the day to attend Rose Berger’s mother’s memorial, while Elaine and Chris Wight continued working hard completing the Healing Haunted Histories video series for the upcoming “Throughlines” Resource Packet—watch for an end of month announcement!
